Just opened:
Old Masters, New Amsterdam, at the New York Historical Society, through August 30. ‘This first-of-its-kind exhibition uses paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and their contemporaries to help us envision life in the little Dutch settlement that would become New York.’
Helen Frankenthaler: The Moment and the Distance, at Gagosian, through July 30. ‘Surveying four decades of paintings from 1960 to 1992, the exhibition features more than twenty of Frankenthaler’s largest, most ambitious works.’

Sotheby’s: The New York Sales. Exhibitions are open May 2-18 for May 13-18 auctions. Admission is free but requires a timed reservation.
Although the event’s marketing is heavy on contemporary authors (Rothko, Picasso, Warhol, Haring, etc.), it also features plenty of figurative and representational art, including works by Van Gogh, Antonio López García, Degas, Bonnard, Mondrian, Childe Hassam, Schiele, and more.
Christie’s: 20th/21st Century auction series. Exhibitions are open May 9-18 for May 18-22 auctions.
